Does every wisdom tooth need removing?

No. A wisdom tooth that is healthy, functional and easy to clean may simply be monitored. Removal may be recommended when there is recurring infection, decay, damage to a neighbouring tooth, a cyst or another clear clinical concern.

Your assessment and care

  1. Listen and examine. We review the pattern of symptoms, examine the tooth and surrounding gum, and check neighbouring teeth.
  2. Understand the position. An X-ray may be recommended to study the tooth, roots and nearby anatomy.
  3. Discuss the options. Dr Shweta explains whether local care, monitoring, removal or referral is most suitable for the individual case.
  4. Plan recovery. If removal is appropriate, the procedure, anaesthesia, likely recovery and aftercare are explained before you decide.

Wisdom tooth FAQs

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?+

No. Removal should have a clinical reason. Healthy, functional wisdom teeth that can be kept clean may be monitored at routine examinations.

Will I need an X-ray?+

An X-ray is often useful for understanding the tooth position, roots, neighbouring tooth and nearby structures. It is recommended when clinically indicated.

What is recovery like?+

Swelling, tenderness and restricted mouth opening can occur. Recovery varies with the tooth position and complexity. You will receive individual aftercare and clear advice on what is normal and when to call.

When is wisdom tooth pain urgent?+

Seek urgent help if swelling is rapidly worsening, you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, or you feel very unwell. For persistent pain, swelling, discharge or restricted opening, contact the clinic for prompt assessment.
